Chase Elliott Open to More Truck Races This Season

By  |

While Chase Elliott was hoping to have some fun in today’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event, it turned into a bit of a challenge after some early trouble. However, he fought back to post a top-five finish.

Starting in the ninth spot, Elliott ran up front in the initial stage of the event, at one point inside of the top-five, biding his time. However, with 15 laps left in the first stage, he’d have a right rear tire go down, bringing out the caution. His GMS Racing team was able to fix the minimal damage to the No. 23 Allegiant Travel / NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet and get him back out on track for the website.

Restarting back in the 20s, Elliott would begin to work his way back towards the front over the course of the event, crossing the line eighth at the end of the second stage. The strong run continued into the second half of the race as he worked his way as high as sixth before the final caution with six laps to go. He was then able to get a good final restart, crossing the finish line in fifth.

For Elliott, it marked his first truck race since running Martinsville Speedway last October, and only his second since running a partial schedule in the series in 2013. It was an opportunity which came about following a phone call from Mike Beam about a month ago asking if he’d be interested.

“It was really kind of a no-brainer for me,” he said coming into the weekend. “I think they are a team that is doing a lot of things, I think, in the right direction. They seem to be building their program the right way. I have known some of those guys over there for a long time. Mike (Beam) used to work at Dad’s shop back when he did his own deal and what not. From that side, it’s pretty cool, and once I got the okay from all the folks at Hendrick Motorsports, it was straight forward.”

There have been no further events announced yet this season for Elliott, but he noted that he “would be open to it for sure.”

“We haven’t really talked about any other races,” he added. “I have expressed interest in doing some other races; unfortunately, it is not that easy. We will see. I hope we can have a good run for those guys. We will have, I think, Allegiant on board and NAPA on the truck this weekend too. Hopefully, we can have a good run for them, and maybe that will offer some more opportunities to do it again in the future with them.”
